Context

Researcher Notes: A New Women’s Tarot deck and pamphlet by Billie Potts is the culminating work of various female artists from the Catskill Mountains of New York State. At the time of its creation in the late 1970s, most tarot decks were heteronormative and Christianized. The New Women’s Tarot allows women and Lesbians to repossess tarot as a healing practice. The imagery on the cards center Goddess culture, including plants, moons, serpents, and sacred animals. The back illustration of a double-sided axe, or labrys, was a popular symbol of Lesbianism in the 1970s due to its association with Amazon fighters. Along with the cards found in most standard tarot decks, A New Women’s Tarot also includes cards that speak to women’s spirituality, such as “Amazon of Swords” and “Sybil.” -- Maya Joncas, 2026
