Description

A Poet's Tarot is a women-oriented 74 card deck from 1986. It has black and white non-traditional illustrations on one side, and on the back of each card is a linked poem in purple and silver (instead of a universal design). The suits of Sticks, Bowls, Knives and Pens are numbered from 1 to 13 - there's no distinction made for the court cards.

Context

Researcher Notes: Mixing poetry and feminist imagery, A Poet’s Tarot was made by Jesse Cougar in 1986. The deck includes black and white ink drawings on one side, and short poems that expand the card’s meaning on the reverse. The suits have been renamed from Wands to Knives, Cups to Bowls, Swords to Pens, and Pentacles to Sticks. There are no court cards, but rather each suit is numbered between one and thirteen, the number of moons in a year. -- Maya Joncas, 2026
