Tracing its name back to the first newspaper in the American colonies published by Benjamin Harris in 1690 ("Publick Occurences,") and established in Vermont in January of 1976 by the Frayed Page Collective, "Public Occurence" set five main goals for itself. First, to develop a communication network in Vermont between social change groups. Second, to provide access to news and ideas ignored or distorted by mainstream media. Third, to offer an outlet for diverse forms of expression and public testimony. Fourth, to support and assist resistance movements. Fifth, to demonstrate the relationship between cultural and political change. Originally affiliated with the Catholic Tribune, the issuance of the May 1976 edition, entitled "Women Loving Women," terminated that relationship.Publication Details
