Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace & Justice

Name/Title

Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace & Justice

Description

This historic 1983 poster advertises the Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice held at the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, New York. Created by artist Bonnie Acker, the artwork highlights local legacies of peace and resistance, connecting the feminist and anti-nuclear protest to historical milestones in Seneca County.

Context

The Women’s Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice was a historic, women-only peace camp established in the summer of 1983. Located on 52 acres near Romulus, New York, it directly bordered the Seneca Army Depot. Thousands gathered to protest the planned deployment of U.S. nuclear Cruise and Pershing II missiles. The top section of the poster references the year 1590, when women of the Hotinonsionne (Iroquois) Confederacy gathered at Seneca to demand an end to war among nations. The poster also showcases how Seneca County was a major stop on the Underground Railroad in the 1800s, where early feminists organized the first women's rights convention in 1848, and where women protested for peace during the nuclear threat of the early 1980s.
