Context

The "Women's Studies Quarterly," established in 1972 and known as the "Women's Studies Newsletter" until 1981, evolved gradually out of the Clearinghouse on Women's Studies, itself established in 1969 by Florence Howe of Goucher College. With support from the Modern Language Association, and at Howe's behest, the Clearinghouse became a way of connecting scholars in the burgeoning field of women's studies and published three Guides to Women's Studies Courses and Programs between 1971 and 1973. An east coast women's studies conference which grew out of these early networking efforts saw a group of women instigate the founding of the Women's Studies Newsletter as a "forum throughout the country for the women's studies movement." Originally published by the Feminist Press, the National Women's Studies Association, founded in 1977, assumed co-publishing responsibilities from 1977 until 1982, when the Feminist Press once again became sole publisher.
