Context

A balance scale is an instrument used to precisely measure the weight or mass of an object by comparing it to a known standard or reference weight. These scales function based on equilibrium principles, where the mass of one object is balanced against a predetermined mass. The intricate metal components highlight the craftsmanship and engineering typical of earlier scientific instruments, reflecting a careful consideration of both functionality and aesthetic in its design. This balance scale was used by employee of the Waseca E. F. Johnson Co., John Matz, for weighing gold, a component in some of the Johnson Radio products.
