Description

Clare Anderson Dog Tags. Material: metal. Size: 1 1/4" x 2". The image shows two metallic dog tags, one attached to a ball chain, with the upper tag having engraved text including a name and numbers, and the lower tag repeating the same information with an additional handwritten accession number.

Context

The 1st line of the tags contains the soldier's name. The 2nd line contains the soldier's Army Serial Number, the tetanus shot year, and the blood type. The Army Serial Number was unique to the soldier and was used on all paperwork including military ID cards, dog tags, driving licenses etc. Dog tags are typically worn around the neck and are placed in the mouth of a deceased soldier for identification purposes. A second disc was required to be suspended from the first by a short string or chain. The first tag was to remain with the body, while the second was for burial service record keeping.
