THE KITCHEN HISTORY IN THIS OLD FAMILY SNAPSHOT!
By Dallas McColley (as told on Facebook page)
This is my Grandma & Grandpa (FREDA & GRANT McCOLLEY) and was taken in the kitchen of their Otisco township farm. They moved to that farm in 1942 and lived there until 1964.
They are still using the old Wood Stove with the stove pipe going up and across ceiling so it could join into the chimney. I remember that wood stove being in the little summer wash house, north of the regular house. I don’t remember if it was ever used in that building, or if it was just moved there for storage when they got the electric stove. The electric stove was not where this wood stove is located.
At the time this picture was taken, there was no Kitchen Sink; that is warm water in that pan, heated on the stove, so Grandma can wash the dirty dishes. And when the dishes were done, the pan of water was carried outside and dumped on the ground; not going down the kitchen sink drain.
Wallpaper on the wall! I don’t know if Grandma M was a bit unique in her wallpapering. She didn’t use the same wallpaper on all four walls in the room. It was generally a different wallpaper on one or two walls of the room. I can’t see the other side of the room in this picture to know about this room.
I remember both of my Grandmas always in a dress and in this picture, Grandpa is wearing the farm bib overalls. After he stopped farming, I don’t remember him wearing them. (My other grandpa always wore the striped bib overalls at home.)
And Grandpa M. has that Camel cigarette in his mouth. My other Grandpa chewed his Copenhagen snuff. Neither were good healthy habits of that day, but no one questioned them in doing so!
THE OLDEN DAYS and looking at and remembering OLD PICTURES of those days! In these days, they seem like far simpler times. Sometimes it would be nice to go back, but then I think of many things that we take for granted in our modern conveniences that we didn’t have in that not so distant past.Cataloged By
