Context

In 1854, stepcousins F. William Minske and Gottlieb F. Kanne emigrated from Prussia to find a new home for the Kanne, Marzahn, and Minske families. They left Prussia in 1855, traveled to Hamburg, and boarded a three-masted ship, "The Elida," along with 16 adults and nine children. The rest of the family followed the following year. In 1876, Gottlieb Kanne was reported to be living in Iosco Township, Waseca County, Minnesota.
