Fully grooved maul used by Native Americans. Dr. Schirmer of Minnesota State University, Mankato visited 2 July 2013 and determined that this is a Native American tool. Ground stone tools came into use in South Dakota about 2000 years ago. Tools such as this one were pecked into rough shape with small stones and then ground smooth against a hard rock or boulder. The groove, which encircles the hammer on the top and sides, was for hafting to a wood handle.
