Description

1930 Railroad Date Nail. Material: metal. Size: 1/2" diameter head x 2 1/2" L. Description: steel wire nail - flat head stamped "30" - horizontally ribbed shank - pointed end.

Context

Date nails were driven into ties either at the treating plant to indicate the year of treatment, or at the track, to indicate the year the tie was laid. Dated nails were installed in ties to help determine how well certain types of wood and types of treatments held up the best.
