Description

Standing Seamer. Material: Size: Description: seamer with a spring.

Context

The standing seamer was used for crimping tin roofs. Men would stand on the roofs and crimp the two pieces of tin together so that it wouldn't leak through. O.W. Burritt was the man who made this in his machine shop in Weedsport, NY. In November of 1871 this tool was patented. Burritt was known for making the first all steal building in the country. The building was an Opera House built in 1890 and burned in a fire in the 1930s. The difference between this seamer and another seamer also at Farmamerica is that this one has a spring to help open the seamer. June 2023: All WCHS items that were previously on loan to Farmamerica were sold at public auction, absorbed into the Farmamerica collection or transferred to the Historical Society Hodgson Hall Collection in June 2023 when the collection agreement between the two entities was ended.
