Description

Nålbinding Shawl. Cream-colored wool shawl worked from the center out. Created using nålbinding, a needlecraft made from loops of yarn that predates knitting or crochet. The textile is created by passing a needle through the yarn, forming continuous interlocking loops. Rare example of the technique, likely the only example in the collection.

Context

Ella Johnson and Franklin L. Manthey were married in 1920 in her father's farm house (Charles A. Johnson). Franklin and Ella Johnson Manthey are Janice Whistler's parents. This shawl was part of the wedding gown ensemble (see 1992.40.1).
