Context

This stove was used for many years, the sole heating unit in the Congregational Church of Waseca. It was located in a pit beneath the church and the heat ascended through a grating in the main aisle. The stove was fed with cord wood. C.J. Johnson served as custodian for many years and his boys, Marvin, Edgar and Everett sawed and lugged tons of wood to keep it hot. Those who can remember the old church with its red carpet and fold up seats, found no fault with the heating arrangements. It was replaced with a furnace in 1924.
