Want to open a World War II era time capsule with us?
At the Library & Museum, several time capsules once laid by Freemasons throughout Washington in cornerstone-laying ceremonies are now housed in our archives, including this one laid on May 3,1941 at a memorial to Grand Mound Lodge No.3.
Grand Mound Lodge No.3 (chartered 1858) was one of the founding Lodges of the Grand Lodge of Washington. It was a military Lodge located inside Fort Henness in Grand Mound, Washington, where 240 American settlers lived for over a year during the Puget Sound War (1855-1856). Grand Mound Lodge surrendered its charter in 1868.
Some of the treasures placed inside included WWII National Defense stamps and tokens, a cut of wood said to be from the original Grand Mound Lodge No.3, and a handwritten letter from the Masons who laid the cornerstone. The memorial was rededicated in 2010, and the original time capsule was removed and brought to the Library & Museum.
Thank you to the Washington State Library for providing a high-resolution scan of this illustration of Fort Henness, located in 'From Grand Mound to Scatter Creek' by David James (1980).
