Description

Used as a Wig Stand by Mr Justice Manisty, Sir Henry Frederick Manisty QC (13 Dec 1808 – 31 Jan 1890)

Context

The reference to "Mr Justice Manisty, the man they couldn't hang" is a misnomer. While Sir Henry Manisty was a High Court judge, the individual famously known as "The Man They Couldn't Hang" was John "Babbacombe" Lee. John Lee was sentenced to death for the murder of Emma Keyse in 1885, but the execution failed three times due to a faulty scaffold. Sir Henry Manisty, on the other hand, was a judge who presided over cases in the High Court, including some notable ones like Regina v. Bishop of Oxford and Belt v. Lawes
