Metal tool with handle and gauge.

Context

According to the Ashcroft Steam, Pressure and Vacuum Gauges catalog G, published in 1920, the paper tester worked as follows. “The Ashcroft Paper Tester furnishes a positive mechanical means of determining the strength of paper. The paper to be tested is inserted in the clamp and secured by turning the knurled disc to the right. The handle of the tester is designed at the end to receive the forefinger of the operator, and by turning the handle to the right, pressure is brought to bear on the paper within the clamp. As the handle is turned, this pressure is indicated on the dial until the breaking point of the paper is reached, at which time the hand on the dial remains stationary, indicating the bursting strength of the paper in pounds per square inch.” The Ashcroft paper tester was introduced in 1912 and was still in use in 1948. In the early 20th century there was a wide range of papers available and the test was developed so that the quality of a paper could be accurately judged.
