Description

Hollow leather tube, tapering to belt with metal buckle. Brass closure to the tube with small shovel inside. Engraved Dixon & Sons Patent.

Context

Founded in 1806 in Sheffield, James Dixon & Sons emerged as a prominent British manufacturer during the Industrial Revolution. They specialised in a wide range of pewter ware, electroplated Britannia metal, silverware, and electroplated nickel silver, they produced a diverse range of products for kitchens and dining rooms, They were world leaders in shooting accessories and exported quantities of powder flasks to America in the 19th century. They were also famous for their whistles. Initially situated on Silver Street (1806) and later at Cornish Place (1822) in Sheffield, the family-run enterprise thrived until 1976.
