Description

Two cockfighting spurs - long metal hooks attached to leather band to be wrapped around the cockerels leg. The metal spur has a small circular metal tube attached to a metal plate which enables it to be attached to the leather band. It is hand sewn in place. The cocks' own spur would be passed through the tube. There is some decoration on the top of the tube and an R and L to mark which leg the spur should be put on.

Context

Cock fighting was the ancient sport and gambling opportunity, which became a popular pastime in England during the 16th century. King Henry VIII had a cock fight pit built at Whitehall Palace during his reign, which illustrates the popularity of this once underground activity. Apart from a short ban during the commonwealth period under Cromwell, it remained legal until 1849. Sadly, it is still practised in many countries and remains popular in parts of South East Asia.
