Description

Wooden staves bucket with fitting lid and metal bands and handles.

Context

The purpose of pressing the curds is to expel excess whey and form the cheese into familiar shapes of hard and semi-hard cheese. A cheese cloth might have been placed in the bucket, the curds poured in and then the lid placed on top. The lid would have been pressed down little by little, it is necessary to go slowly for air and moisture to be released. Once the cheese has been pressed for long enough in the press, it is likely to be wrapped and stored.
