Description

Workhouse Stamp - Receiving

Context

In a UK workhouse, the "Receiving" ward refers to the area where newly admitted paupers (poor people) would initially go upon arrival, where they would be processed, given a bath, issued a workhouse uniform, and medically examined before being assigned to their designated living quarters within the workhouse; essentially, it was the intake area for new inmates.
