Corncrake Lure

Entry/Object ID

Description

Wooden instrument with a rotating corrugated wheel that makes a click against the upper part of the instrument which moves up and done under the pressure. Handmade.

Context

Corncrakes were abundant in fields up to the later part of the 19th century but the introduction of mechanised mowing machines affected these ground nesting birds adversely as did the changing practice of changing the late hay-cut to the early silage cut. By the turn of the century they had mostly disappeared. A small number of skylarks remain in the Hebrides, Scotland and a re-introduction in East Anglia, UK.
