Description

Mechanical object with clockwork working to fire cartridges. Made of metal and brass on a wooden stand.

Context

Set with 5 cartridges which were fired one every half hour. Made in 1888 by Millichamps at Presteigne Radnorshire, Wales and described as a Field Clock Gun. Charles Millichamp was a watchmaker who owned a fishing tackle shop. In 1888 Millichamp worked with William Maund who was a landowner that lived nearby in Shobdon, Herefordshire, England, to invent a new mechanical scarecrow in the form of a self-acting field clock gun. They patented this new invention on May 3, 1888. One model was made to be suspended from a tree and another had a man in silhouette in front of the mechanism. I believe this example may have lost its cover.
