Context

Horse racing, in various forms, has existed as far back as the Romans, however it wasn't until the formation of the Jockey Club in 1750, that rules and regulations were developed to ensure that races were run fairly. By 1752 the Club had bought a plot of land on Newmarket Heath, later to become Newmarket race course. The rules became well regarded across the country and were subsequently adopted by everyone. Weight and age are two critical aspects of horse racing. Early races were a test of endurance and speed, sometimes carrying various loads in an attempt to level the playing field. By the 18th and 19th centuries when the race formats were evolving, weight handicaps were adjusted to give a fair chance of winning to everyone. The adjustment was based on experience and skill, "emphasising the importance of finding equilibrium between weight and ability". (The Paddock Punter).
