Description

Wood with iron frame brick mould. Two handles made from branch wood.

Context

Brought to Britain by the Romans, bricks have been used and re-used over time. From the 1300s the craft was regualted by guilds and the Worshipful Company of Tylers (Brick makers) still exists today. After the great fire of London, in 1666, Charles I designated that all new buildings should be built of brick. Hundreds of itinerant brick makers travelled across the country for work but by the 1820s mechanisation had arrived for the industry and permanent brick yards could manufacture thousands of bricks per day.
