Description

Burnt clay drainage pipes - 'D' shaped or horseshoe shaped.

Context

It is difficult to date the start of the use of these kinds of drains, however there is evidence that they were commonly used by 1800. In 1784 a tax was imposed on bricks and that included these burnt clay pipes. After much protest and pressure in 1850 the tax was removed but from then on the pipes were stamped with the word DRAIN. Hence it is possible these pipes date from between 1826 - 1850.
