Description

Heavy iron scissor type tool, with circular moulds for lead for shot.

Context

The lead was poured into the moulds when they were closed through the funnel aperture. When the lead was set, the shot was released and any excess lead filed off. It was necessary to pour the lead slowly into the mould so no air pockets were formed. The shot would have had a join line around it which would make it inaccurate, so this 'ridge' had to filed off. Many shot moulds were for one single shot. This example makes four shot.
