Context

Riding Crops have played a role in horse training and riding techniques since ancient times. They were developed to aid control and communication between horse and rider. Ancient Greek and Roman crops were made out of leather or braided materials, usually dependant on whatever materials were available locally - for instance leather, reed or rope. Gradually crops developed to meet the needs of the changing equestrian disciplines, for example in dressage which requires a long flexible crop to emphasise the control of the precise movements.
