Context

Inscription round the circumference says Perth Glass Works. Established in Perth by John Moncrieff Senior in 1865, the glassworks was primarily an industrial business until 1924. Glass ball shooting started in Boston, USA, in 1866 with the first competition in 1887. At first it was not successful as the traps used to eject the balls sent them directly up in the air not giving much competition for the shooter. However a trap was soon designed that sent the balls some 60 feet in the air with a long arc. A diamond pattern was raised from the surface of the ball in order to prevent shot from bounding or ricocheting off the edge of the surface of the ball. In most instances any shot hitting one of these ridges would break the ball. These early glass balls were much harder to break than the clay pigeons of today.
