Whitbread & Co Ltd, founded in 1742, was a British brewery that became the largest in the world by the 1780s, eventually evolving into a major hotel and restaurant company, now known as Whitbread PLC. Samuel Whitbread, in partnership with Godfrey and Thomas Shewell, established Whitbread & Co in 1742, initially with breweries in Old Street and Brick Lane, London. Samuel Whitbread later bought out his partners and expanded into porter production with the purchase of a brewery in Chiswell Street, by 1780's becoming the largest brewery in the world.Category
