Description

White paper bank note for the sum of £5, issued 1950.

Context

The very first bank notes were issued in 1694, as a receipt in exchange for gold loans to the bank to fund King William III’s war against France. From then and to this day every bank note bears the statement “I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of…” The 'white fiver' as it became known changed little till 1945 when a metal thread was added as a security measure. Sadly it was removed from circulation in 1961.
