Description

Womens Land Army Badge

Context

The WLA was set up to fill farming and horticultural jobs that were left vacant as men went off to war. This badge is the standard issue badge of the second world war and was issued to all members upon joining the WLA. On the front it depicts a wheatsheaf and on the reverse is stamped ‘Marples & Beasley Birmingham’. The badge was worn on jumpers, coats or hats. The WLA charged members for additional badges or replacements due to national shortages during and shortly after the war.
