Description

Oil lamp for a bicycle. The lamp has a large polished glass lens for amplifying the light and coloured glass 'jewels' on either side of the body for added visibility. The lamp has a reservoir for fuel, which includes a wick. Once the lamp is lit and the reservoir shut the lamp will not get blown out.

Context

The lamp was sold for 3$ by The Aladdin Lamp Co., Newark N. J. USA. The company specialised in making bicycle lamps. The patent for this design was granted 1886. A further patent was applied for in 1897. This company should not be confused with the more famous Aladdin Co. which started trading under that name in the early 1900s. The more famous Aladdin Co. was not able to use the name Aladdin until the Aladdin Lamp Co., had ceased to exist.
