Context

Made by G. & J W Hawksley. Established in 1840, this firm manufactured powder and later dram flasks, alongside sporting requisites. The partners were George Hawksley (c.1806-1879) and John William Hawksley (c.1814-1890), who were the sons of Hollis Croft horn merchant, John Hawksley. Their premises were in Carver Street in Sheffield and according to the census in 1851 they employed 60 people. The firm continued trading until 1957. Over the years they made every item that would have been used by anyone using a gun for sport or making a living, from gun cases to sandwich boxes, cleaning and reloading kits to various oils.
