Description

Model of horsedrawn cart with a selection of typical tools of the time. The wheels are constructed of wood with a metal rim. Three different craftsmen were involved in the construction of one cart - the wheelwright to make the wheels, the wainwright to make the body and the blacksmith to make the metal parts. There were two basic styles , the box wagon and the bow wagon. Designs vary from county to county.

Context

Up the mid 1700s when the industrial revolution was beginning to draw farm labour to the cities it became important to find more efficient ways to farm. In a short time, the small 2-wheeled farm carts generally in use became inadequate. These carts were replaced with much larger four-wheeled wagons along the lines of the much larger haulage wagons. Model made by Alex Threfall, wheelwright, Eccleston, Nr. Chorley, Lancashire
