Context

The company of Bassetts was started in Sheffield in 1842. George Bassett the son of a farmer started a confectionary business in Sheffield. By 1876 his factory was supposedly the largest confectionary manufacture in the world. Liquorice All-Sorts, the story goes, were created by accident - a tray of separately packed liquorice lines were dropped and the contents scattered about. A smart sales representative realised that the sale of a mixed box of liquorice sweets might appeal to the public. And it did!. The shield on the box with 8 arrows and the motto: 'Deo Ad Juvante Labore Proficit' - With God's Help our Labour is Successful. This motto is used by Sheffield City Council with their coat of arms.
