Bicycle bell showing cord, wheel and bell

Name/Title

Bicycle Bell

Description

Metal instrument, with a mechanism to strike and ring the bell. Made approx 1914.

Context

The first bicycle was introduced by John Richard Dedicoat in 1877. A small bell was mounted on the handlebars of the bike and the rider pressed a lever to make a hammer strike the bell, producing a clear attention-grabbing sound. Over the years the variations in design were varied and versatile. When the cord was pulled it put the wheel in contact with the tyre. The wheel then rotated the 'clappers' hammers to strike the bell.
