Context

An example of one of the first bicycle pumps made by Ernest Hill c 1891. It is not known when the first pumps were actually made but it is believed to be around 1887 when John Boyd Dunlop invented the first inflatable or pneumatic tyre. Ernest Hill was founded in 1841 in Sheffield where it remains today. Hill has been involved in the innovation, design and manufacture of fluid transfer equipment for over 180 years. One of the early products was an air compressor pump designed for the veterinary surgeon John Boyce Dunlop.
