Description

Brass lamp with a tall chimney. The handle has a keyhole space in the handle so that it may hung up. The chimney is marked Fireproof. 'Finest crystal. Made in JA'. The burner (the piece that the wick rests in) is a 'dead-flame burner' and has a rope-type wick which can be adjusted with the rachet. The 'dead-flame' burner is designed to eliminate the effects of the draughts on the flame.

Context

This Veritas brass lamp could have been used in a kitchen and according to a German brochure was nicknamed the 'thunderbox' because it was used to light your way across the courtyard at night to the outside 'privy'. The burner, the information says, had a special casing which acted as a windshield, so the flame would not be burned out.
