Description

Metal machine that ejects the 'saucers' - the clay pigeons.

Context

Clay pigeon shooting has had a long journey from early competitions, where birds were hidden under top hats, to an Olympic Sport. It wasn't until the 1900s that traps automatically re-cocked and re-loaded. In 1910 W.J. Jeffery advertised this clay trap called the ‘Expert’, which features the long, coil-spring and arm with lever release, set on a cast iron base and fully portable. It was alterable for direction and angle of throw. Jeffery claimed the traps were ‘used by many of the leading clubs, shooting grounds and gun-fitting schools in Great Britain’.
