Context

In pigeon racing, the time is recorded by attaching a unique numbered rubber ring to the bird's leg before the race, and when the pigeon returns home, the racer removes the ring and inserts it into a specialized "pigeon clock" which registers the exact time it was placed in, thus recording the bird's arrival time; the fastest bird based on its recorded time wins the race
