Description

Wooden receptacle to hold powder which is shaken into a glove. The long handle enable powder to be shaken into each finger. The bottom of the powderer unscrews so it can be filled and the holes in the top allow the powder to be shaken into the gloves.

Context

In the late 1800s gloves were worn for dressy occasions and the glove powderer made it easier to pull on kid/leather gloves. Ladies hands were considered beautiful if they were small and slender and gloves were often tight in order to squeeze the hands to make them smaller and therefore more attractive.
