Context
The medieval style chatelaine became popular towards the end of the 19th century. Like the keychain that was worn in the middle ages, women kept keys for various objects round the house such as tea caddies and jewellery boxes or scissors and fans. As with many Victorian designs they are clever, useful and decorative and also designed to be shown off.
