Context

Over the centuries and across the world, decorations have been of straw or a similar material. There have been many interpretations about their use and meaning. Whether they were made to appease gods or to ensure a good harvest, there is a recognition in the circular nature of life from springing up at the beginning and harvesting at the end. They can also be a way of thanking the earth for her bounty. Traditions of Plough Sunday and Harvest Festival are both celebrations where corn is an important part.
