Description

A 'chatelaine' type skirt lifter - the brass clip is slipped over the waistband and the clip can secure and pull up the skirt. The clip was clamped mid-way up the skirt. On the clip is stamped USE ME/ Patent/ H.K./ RUBBER CLIP

Context

The medieval style chatelaine became popular towards the end of the 19th century. Like the keychain that was worn in the middle ages, women keep keys for various objects round the house such as tea caddies and jewellery boxes or scissors and fans. Like many Victorian designs they clever, useful and decorative and designed to be shown.
