John Davis, began to manufacture mining equipment in 1840, such as mine safety lamps based on the designs invented by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1815. Production of miner’s lamps continued for more than a 100 years, reaching 10,000 a year by the end of the century. The company continued to expand and develop further equipment for mining including electrical systems, a signalling system and a loudspeaker communication system.
