On the back it states that the machine belongs to the Imperial Tobacco Company, Ogden Branch Liverpool and is to be used for their products. The Imperial Tobacco Company was formed in 1901 when an American business led by James Duke looked to acquire British tobacco companies in order to dominate the UK market, the previously separate Wills, Player, and Lambert & Butler companies and 11 other smaller companies, came together, and formed the Imperial Tobacco Company.
Subsequently they acquired Ogden's of Liverpool a small company started in 1860 by Thomas Ogden. In 1901 he was bought by James Duke of American Tobacco for £818, 000 but was back in British hands by the formation of the Imperial Tobacco company.Acquisition
