Description

Metal box with internal brass clock works, with a brass winding key on the removable back, and two hinged side doors to gain access to the works. Above the winding key is a circular knob, which when turned stops and starts the removable revolving lure. The rotating wings, shaped like a bird's wings are inset with numerous small mirror glass pieces and where they have been lost have been replaced with sequins. When revolving these reflect the light and attract larks, who have an insatiable curiosity and attraction to anything that glitters. One wing rotates clockwise, whilst the other anti-clockwise.

Context

Possibly French late 18th century as is indicated by the plate with SGDG which was a common abbreviation for "Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement“ (patent without government guarantees). This was a French type of patent that ceased to exist in 1968.
