A Bedfordshire bobbin lace collarContext
Arriving in England in the late 16th century from Flanders and Italy probably, bobbin lace gained a stronger foothold after the arrival of the Huguenot refugees who brought their expertise with them. Bobbin lace thrived in England in Devon (Honiton lace) and in the Midlands in the counties of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire where the particular styles of Bucks Point and Bedfordshire lace evolved. The Bedfordshire style emerged in the 19th century typically featuring curved floral designs and incorporating plaits and tallies in the pattern.Acquisition
