Description

Strong wooden box with ventilated holes on all sides and with a metal closing hasp, which may have had a lock attached. The ventilation prevented the eggs from 'sweating'. Originally the box would have been divided into compartments to make spaces for each egg.

Context

On the front inscribed in the wood is the makers details: 'Ventilator' Patent Egg Carrier No.6884, 1890. Dairy Supply Co. Lim . . London, Edinburgh, Cork and Belfast. Sole agent for the Patentee, c. 1900. The Dairy Supply Co. Coptic and Gt Russell Street, London was registered in May 1880. It was a subsidiary of the Express Dairy Company Ltd and started to make dairy equipment including conical milk churns. (Churns were 17 gallon galvanised iron containers designed for transporting milk by rail). After the war two other companies merged with the Express Dairy Company Ltd and it became the largest milk dairy company in the UK - Express Dairies. The Coptic street premises were used as a diary until after WWII and in 1965 it was sold to Pizza Express.
